Come and practice working equitation in Portugal, on noble Lusitano horses, renowned for their friendly character, their ability to learn quickly and their comfortable gaits.
During the 3 trail ride days, you will ride throughout beautiful and different landscapes, from a vineyard, along a river, crossing large fields, to some typical Portuguese villages taking little paths. In the evening, you will sleep in some different Portuguese farms.
The stay is divided into 2 parts:
- 3 days of working riding
- 3 days of trail ride
The Lusitanian, born in Portugal, is a horse with a nice character, with beautiful gaits and who learns quickly. It is particularly suitable for working equitation, which is a discipline on its own, an equestrian activity practiced in many countries, in Europe, Asia, North and South America.
It consists of 3 parts: a dressage test, a handling test and a sorting or herding test.
Working equitation is like the fun of dressage with adrenaline added!
Your coach will guide you during these 3 days of training and will make you work in dressage and initiation to working riding. The Lusitano horses on site are very well trained and are waiting for you!
Accommodation will be the typical farm where 4 bedrooms all renovated with their own bathroom welcome you.
You can also enjoy the calm of the garden and the swimming pool.

After your Paris-Lisbon flight, someone will pick you up at the airport around noon. After your transfer and installation in your comfortable rooms and a small snack, the program will start and you will have your first class in the afternoon at the farm. Dinner and night at the farm.
Day 2: Monday the 9th
One class in the morning and one class in the afternoon after lunch. The lessons will be classic dressage and the basics of working equitation. They will know how to find the horse with whom you will get along perfectly.
Evening, dinner and night at the farm.
Day 3: Tuesday the 10th
A new lesson in the morning and again in the afternoon. Debriefing of the day during dinner and last night at the farm before setting off the next day for our trail ride.
Day 4: Wednesday the 11th
Let the trail begin! Our destination for today: a vineyard! Quinta da Ribeirinha. And the beautiful private Estate of a Lusitano horse breeder, Quinta da Boa Vista. On our well trained Lusitano horses we ride from Quinta dos Pinheiros into the direction of Povoa de Santarém. We ride over rolling hills with glorious views before we pass the narrow historical roads of a typical Portuguese village.
After approximately 2 hours riding we arrive at Quinta da Ribeirinha where we are warmly welcomed with a wine tasting and a delicious lunch. We continue our ride in direction to the Tejo and arrive at the amazing private farm Quinta da Boa Vista, home of a lusitano horse breeder especially successful with their Lusitano horses in carriage driving at international level. Here we stay overnight and enjoy the very special views over the river and get an insight view into this grand Quinta.
Day 5: Thursday the 12th
Today we enjoy the Tejo valley and continue to experience the charm of our Ribatejo region. Great opportunities for long trots and canters!! Leaving from Quinta Boa Vista we ride along the Alviela River before we reach the Tejo River again, with its beautiful sandbanks and beaches. Passing by some old farmhouses we arrive at our special picnic place with a peaceful and calm atmosphere where you can rest and enjoy pure nature. In the afternoon our trail leads us through huge corn fields, on winding paths close to the Tagus River until we arrive in Azinhaga. Azinhaga is renowned as one of the most typical Portuguese villages of the Ribatejo. Crossing this village, soon we ride along some fields with grazing mares; Quinta da Brôa, the home of the famous Veiga stud farm is our destination of today
Small aside on the Veiga family:
It is here in this farm that the cradle of the Lusitanian race is located. The Veiga family has been producing horses of this famous breed for hundreds of years.
One of the founders of this particular line is the stallion “Agareno”, born in 1931. Moreover, the influence of “Miguelista” is quite notable, to be able to mention him as well.
The Veiga is registered in the Lusitano Stud-book, and is managed by the “Associação Portuguesa de Criadores do Cavalo Puro Sangue Lusitano” established in Estoril in the Lisbon Region.
This line is based on a family tradition, which began in the 1850s, with Rafael José da Cunha, continued with Manuel Tavares Veiga, and is carried on today by his descendants, Carlos and Manuel Veiga Tavares. The latter participated in the World Equestrian Games which took place in Caen in the north of France, in the region of Normandy in 2014.
Breathe in the atmosphere filled with tradition, enjoy the farm and the incredible Lusitano horses!
You will sleep in guest rooms in worker’s houses completely renovated and restored for more comfort.
After a bit of rest, and why not take a dip in the swimming pool, we will have dinner in Golegà, the “capital” of horses.
Day 6: Friday the 13th of october
Quinta da Brôa – Golegà
This morning you can have a little longer breakfast, some rest before we start our guided tour through the VEIGA studfarm to hear more about this special place. With a bit of luck we see Manuel Veiga training one of his beautiful Lusitanos. Often you can see him training riding one of his stallions in a special workout on the same fields with his breeding mares or having some ‘fun’ riding two horses at the same time. After a little snack and inspired from the morning we get our own horses ready and leave Quinta da Brôa.
Our trail takes us through the meadows of the Veiga stud farm, where we can see again the mares with their foals, and we continue along the natural reserve of Boquilobo. Some nice canters are waiting for you. After approximately 3,5 hours of riding we arrive in Golega, the “Capital of the horses” where we stay for tonight. Golega has a very long tradition and is famous for his annual horse fair in November. You may like to go for a little walk to discover the little roads and hidden traditional shops or coffee bars or you join us to visit our friend and artist Sabine Marciniak: an artist who has dedicated her life to her passion, the painting of Lusitano horses and the equitation art.
We will pick up riders and horses to bring back to the farm for the last night and dinner.
Day 7: Saturday the 14th of october
Transfer from the farm to the airport after breakfast , followed by the flight Lisbon-Paris
